Most of us are aware of a family member or friend who has diabetes. It is also a disease which can occur in pets. As in people, there are different types of diabetes. A pet with diabetes can show a range of symptoms but the longer it is left untreated the more complicated the condition will become.

Early diagnosis and management can improve your pet’s chances. Look out for these signs:

  • Increased thirst and drinking
  • Weight loss
  • Increased Urination
  • Appetite changes
  • Vomiting
  • Lethargy
  • Cataracts

Some breeds are more at risk than other breeds. Overweight pets are also at greater risk, another reason for keeping your dog at its ideal weight.
Your vet can examine your pet and check for diabetes with simple blood and urine tests. Remember that early diagnosis and management is most important.
