It is not uncommon for behavioral problems to develop in older pets. Some of these problems may be behavioral problems that can be encountered in pets of any age; some may be related to other degenerative changes of old age; and some changes are akin to the changes seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

This latter group of changes is known as Cognitive Dysfunction. Some signs might be confusion, disorientation, aimless staring, barking, changes in sleep patterns, house soiling or repetitive/compulsive behaviors.

A physical examination, behavioral history, and laboratory tests can be used to help differentiate Cognitive Dysfunction from other causes of these signs and new drugs are available to treat or control some forms Cognitive Dysfunction.
